Bollywood celebrities are looked up as role models and idols in our society. Fans learn and adapt things that their celebrity does. In fact, we are influenced by the Bollywood celebrities so much that if our favourite star promotes a certain product, we instantly put our faiths in it. Not only the product but often the innocent youth tries to copy the acts of such celebrities. Celebrities promote a certain brand not only to gain attention but also to build up their public image. But often this same advertisement gets them into the controversial circle that just keep evolving until it absorbs everything. Aishwarya Rai Bachchan Bollywood’s leading actress Aishwarya Rai Bachchan got caught into controversy after her new print ad for a jewellery brand showed a coloured child holding an umbrella for her. Aishwarya's this ad created racial controversy. A group of activists wrote an open letter slamming Aishwarya Rai Bachchan. The activists called the advertisement offensive as the ad showed a coloured child carrying an umbrella over Aishwarya's head, which they felt promoted child labour. After the controversy, the jewellery brand sent out a note saying that they will take the ad out of their campaign.
Akshay Kumar Bollywood's Khiladi Akshay Kumar and Mrs Khiladi Twinkle Khanna sparked controversy during a fashion show in March 2009. In the show, Akshay Kumar walked the ramp for a denim brand. Everything was going normally well but then Akshay asked his wife to unbutton his pants, and she did. For this act, a social worked filed a case of 'obscenity' against both the stars and denim brand. On this matter, the Bombay High Court ordered that the police could prosecute the couple and the director of the fashion show if need be. Shocking part was that throughout the controversy, Akshay refused to apologized saying that the act was spontaneous and not at all vulgar. Soon with time, the controversy faded into darkness.
Bipasha Basu and Dino Morea Bipasha Basu and her then partner Dino Moreo in 1998 did a commercial for an international undergarments label. In the advertisement, Dino was seen pulling Bipasha's panties with his teeth, while the advertisement's one-liner read; 'And you thought your appetite for indulgence could only be whetted by Swiss chocolates'. The ad was labelled as extreme for Indian sensibilities. Apart from audiences, the then minister of state for cultural affrairs, Anil Deshmukh expressed his disapprovement on the advertisment and soon enough the campaign was called off.
Amitabh Bachchan Amitabh Bachchan's candy commercial got Big B in a controversial toruble. In the ad, we saw Amitabh pelting stones at a mango tree. The Advertising Standard Council of India commented that looking at Amitabh's actions, children could imitate and get into harmful situations. The advertisement was later taken down. The same year, Big B revealed in an interactive session at IIM - Ahmedabad that he was soon ending his contract with a cola brand. This happened after a school girl questioned the actor's endorsement choices, in Jaipur. The girl questioned Amitabh why he promoted a brand which her teacher termed as poison and harmful. Amitabh Bachchan's confession led to a huge controversy. As the cola brand criticized the actor for having "pocketed Rs 24 crore for the ad" and at a time when the "contract was coming to an end" and then making the decision.
Shah Rukh Khan Bollywood's King Khan, Shah Rukh Khan got into a trouble for endorsing a skin lightening cream product a couple of years ago. The advertisement led to an online campaign titled 'Dark and Beautiful" which urged not only the star but also the brand to stop promoting and encouraging fairness creams. A lot of people backed the campaign's cause, including Aamir Khan, who said that he would never promote such products. But King Khan kept his mum on the whole controversy and still promotes the brand. Shah Rukh Khan is still associated with the brand.
Madhu Sapre and Milind Soman Madhu Sapre and Milind Soman, the very famous models of the 90's got into controversy for doing a shoe commerical in which they posed naked only with a python wrapped around their bodies, the python covered their modesty. The 1995's this ad created quite a buzz among women and animal rights activists. The activists protested outside Model's house. Not only that but some protestors even donated them clothes to cover up their bodies. Soon enough, the advertisement was pulled off. Madhu Sapre and Milind Soman were charged for indecency.
Arbaaz and Malaika Arora Khan Arbaaz Khan and Malaika Arora Khan got into trouble for a coffee commercial in 1993. The ad showed the two cozying up to each other and sharing some hot intimacy. Advertisement's one-liner read, "Real pleasure can't come in an 'instant'". Many people felt that Arbaaz and Malaika's expressions were too giving, suggestive and obsence, while the tagline implicated double meaning and misled the audiences. After a lot of legal proceedings, the advertisement was not taken down, but instead was directly banned.
Pooja Bedi and Marc Robinson Pooja Bedi and Marc Robinson gave fire to controversy after they appeared in a condom advertisement in 1991. The advertisement showed them taking a shower together. The advertisement was considered as one of the boldest on the Indian television and was banned by Doordarshan on the grounds that the ad hurt the conservative sensibilities and feeling of the Indian society.
